Alfred Health Emergency cares for the local communities of southern and Bayside Melbourne as well as for the broader Victorian community through a large number of state-wide services. Care is delivered 24 hours a day, seven days a week at our two campuses: The Alfred Eva and Les Erdi Emergency and Trauma Centre and Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department. Together these sites see and treat in excess of 110,000 patients per annum. The term “Alfred Health Emergency” is used to describe all services provided by medical, nursing, allied health, clerical and many other services to patients presenting to these two sites.

The Alfred Hospital is a major adult tertiary referral hospital and is well known as one of Australasia’s busiest Trauma Centres. In addition, The Alfred is home to many Victorian state-wide services, including the Victorian Adult Burns Unit, Heart and Lung Transplant, HIV Medicine, Cystic Fibrosis, Hyperbaric Medicine, Clinical Haematology, Haemophilia and Malignant Adult Haematology. Sandringham Hospital is a community focused hospital. The Emergency Department is co-located with an Urgent Care Centre run by general practitioners. Obstetrics and gynaecology services at Sandringham are provided by The Women’s at Sandringham.

Therapeutic Relaxation And Enhanced Awareness Training or ‘TREAT’ is a unique experiential self-care program designed for healthcare professionals to help re-calibrate and recover during their busy and stressful work day and life.

TREAT is based on mindfulness and recovery principles, body awareness, relaxation, self- compassion and various self-awareness approaches and education. Participants learn how to pause and find important moments of rest, renewal and clarity to help them navigate life’s many daily stressors and learn how to become more resilient, creative and engaged human beings.

Jo, the founder of  TREAT, is regularly invited to hospitals to present on the latest evidence around workplace stress and burnout and provide staff nourishing self-care sessions. The core program is the popular TREAT one hour, 8 week program that has been delivered to a wide cross section of Alfred Health staff, including psychiatrist trainees;  leadership teams; social workers; and emergency nurses. Treat is also delivered as a formal session included in staff professional education, wellbeing and development programs.

Results of the Alfred Health evaluations include: 99% of staff making positive lifestyle changes, 100% of staff felt better able to deal with stress and 100% of staff would recommend this program to their colleagues.
